Touted as the industry's first hybrid computer, Lenovo's IdeaPad U1 features a detachable screen with its own processor and operating system. Effectively, IdeaPad U1 combines a slate and notebook in one device. As soon as you pull out the 11.6-inch, 1.6 pound multi-touch-enabled screen, it powers up as a slate using its 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon ARM chipset and 16GB of flash memory running on Lenovo's custom Skylight touch-enabled version of Linux. As a notebook, the 3.8 pound device uses an Intel Core 2 Duo CULV processor and a 128GB solid-state drive running on Windows 7. Intel will release its Atom N470 netbook processor on Monday, March 1. The N470 is the second processor based on Intel's new two-chip Pinetrail architecture, wherein graphics and memory control processing have been moved into the main processor. The architecture offers improved performance with reduced power consumption. The integrated graphics processor facilitates smooth play back of 720p HD video. Intel's 1.66GHz N450 was the first processor based on the architecture and powers many netbooks currently in the market. Claimed battery life for N450 powered netbooks typically varies from 10 to 14 hours. The N470 improves on the N450 with its 1.83GHz processing speed. Systems powered by Atom N470 were displayed at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this year. They are now expected to start shipping as early as next week, the source said.

PlanetSolar unveiled the world's largest solar boat at the HDW Shipyard in Germany, on February 25. The 30-meter long catamaran is powered exclusively by high-efficiency solar cells and covered with 500 square meters of photovoltaic solar panels. Designed by a team of international engineers, the boat will be powered by approximately 38,000 next generation cells manufactured by world leader SunPower. Each cell offers an efficiency of at least 22 percent, the highest efficiency solar cells commercially available. The boat will be launched in late March for testing, and then embark on a round-the-world tour in early 2011. The first solar-powered round-the-world voyage - scheduled for April 2011 - will run from East to West, along an equatorial route. The catamaran is expected to be the fastest solar boat to cross the Atlantic Ocean and the first to cross both the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Stopovers include Hamburg, London and Paris in Europe, New York and San Francisco in the U.
