Amazon 10-in and 7-in tablets in time for holidays

Amazon tablets with 10-in and 7-in LCD displays similar to the Nook and Galaxy tab are expected to hit the market in time for the holidays. According to a report in Pcmag.com by analyst Tim Bajarin, quoting sources in Taiwan, Amazon plans to enter the crowded tablet market with devices that have a USP: an excellent reading experience. Amazon initially explored the possibility of offering tablets that could switch between a black and white E Ink-like display optimized for reading and a color LCD typical of contemporary tablet computers. Vendors are known be working on such displays, but they were not in a position to supply them to Amazon before late 2012 or early 2013. As a result, Amazon settled for the traditional LCD display. Barjarin source also confirmed earlier reports that one of the Amazon tablets will feature the quad core NVIDIA T30 "Kal-El" SoC. A lower end device will be based on the Tegra 2 platform. The Kal-El platform gives a 500% performance b

Microsoft to Test Market Windows 8 / ARM Tablets

Microsoft will reportedly test market Windows 8 / ARM tablets before the year end, according to Taiwan based Digitimes. Windows has so far targeted systems using Intel processors, which are optimized for performance, unlike ARM processors, which are optimized for low power consumption and long battery life. High power consumption of Windows systems has prompted most mobile device manufacturers to opt for the combination of Android / ARM systems. Debuting the Windows 8 / ARM combination on Tablet computers entails less risk since tablets are used primarily for content consumption and hence less demanding of processor resources. According to Digitimes, most Notebook manufacturers, concerned over the performance of the Windows 8 / ARM combination, will prefer to wait and watch before taking up production of Windows 8 devices. On Monday, May 23, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer officially announced that Windows 8 will debut in 2012. Speaking to software developers in Tokyo, Ba

Tegra 3 Kal-El SOC Scores 10 Major Brand Phones, Tablets

Nvidia's Tegra 3 SOC, code named Kal-El, will feature in devices from five major phone companies and five major PC manufacturers each. Speaking at the Reuters Technology Summit in New York on Monday, Nvidia co-founder and chief executive Jen-Hsun Huang said that the Santa Clara, California-based chip manufacturer's next generation mobile processor had gained acceptance from major manufacturers for use in phones, tablets and low-powered laptops. "It's got to be at least 10. We have five major phone companies and we have five major PC (manufacturers)," he said. Huang also predicted that just as Android based smartphone sales caught up with and eventually outstripped Apple iPhone sales, Android Honeycomb based tablets would eventually sell more than Apple iPads. "The Android phone took only two and a half years to achieve the momentum that we're talking about. I would expect the same thing on Honeycomb tablets," Huang said. Earlier this

Later in the month Amazon CEO Jeff Bezo

Fluffy Cat Ears Show Emotions

While we are deep in the habit of strewing emoticons around plentifully when socializing in the Internet, some people must be feeling uncomfortable because they are devoid of the facility in the outer world. Surely it is for those who long for a real-life means of showing what they are feeling that the Japanese company Neurowear has catered. Only they will have to wear cat ears . Neurowear’s spokesperson introduced the company’s fluffy cat ears, or “ Necomimi ”, as “new human organs” that are called upon to inform those around you of your emotional state as it undergoes changes. So this cute headwear that looks like an accessory for festivals is really a “vital communication tool.” The neko ears are connected to a sensor that is fixed on the forehead and sends out signals which make the ears react by changing their shape. Thus, when you are feeling blue, the ears droop, when you get tired, they go flat. If you see the ears wiggle you can be sure that the wearer is in merr

Sony Walkman MWZ-B160

Good old Sony’s Walkman is back again. Sony , undoubtedly in the grip of a nostalgic feeling, has gotten the Walkman series back on the line launching the MWZ-B160 Series. The gadgets are equipped with Sony’s ZAPPIN features, the Drag and Drop function, and the Boost button to get an accentuated bass sound. The color matching power illuminator that pulses to the music adds a welcome merry note. We are offered a choice of 4GB MWZ-B163 and MWZ-B163F players and 2GB MWZ-B162 and MWZ-B162F. All of them are small-sized to fit anywhere and won’t be in the way when you work out. Besides, Sony did a good job on batteries that promise 18 hours play when completely charged and an hour and half after a 3-minute charge. Sounds fine!

Kiss Transmission Gadget for Long Distance Relationships

When you’re in love and apart, words do not always suffice. The burning desire for a touch or a kiss gets so intense that you are almost ready to jump out of the good old skin and make a fantastic jump through miles and miles to plant a sweet kiss on your lover’s lips. Well, while you’re not exactly fit to do so, the computer can cover the distance for you. Can we rely on it for transmitting a kiss? Boffins from the Kajimoto Laboratory at the University of Electro-Communications who are busy with the subject of tactile communications are pretty sure we can. They came up with a gadget that you put into your mouth and move around with your tongue. Controlled by and working through your computer, it makes its fellow gadget that is in your lover’s mouth move in the same fashion. Of course, this is not enough, but with the feel of the tongue’s moistness, the taste and the breathing thrown in, you may get a fairly strong sensation of the walls of distance tumbling down around y

Minimalist Saturn Watch

Saturn , the ruler of time, doesn’t stand for too many embellishments, and it’s only natural that a watch inspired by the ringed planet should be as simple as it can be. The new Saturn-style timepiece is made up from two disks with holes, a larger one for hours and a smaller one for minutes, which let us see the time as the disks rotate. The austere design promises to fit into almost any surroundings easily. The night mode is set to switch the backlight automatically for those who wake up during the night.

PreVue Lets See the Fetus

There will always be people who want to hurry some things along, even if it means peeking where nature didn’t intend them to. Melody Shiue , an industrial designer at the University of New South Wales, seems to belong with these. She went and created a gadget entitled PreVue that allows expectant parents to get a clear view of their baby while it’s still in the womb, and enjoy the sight of it moving and rolling around, growing with each passing week. The device is made from e-textile and should be worn on the would-be mom’s stomach. The idea sure sounds great and in some cases can be helpful from the medical standpoint, though it does raises a few questions about the upcoming boy or girl’s privacy. Anyway, the choice is everybody’s personal affair.

Intel's Breakthrough Tri-Gate 3-D Transistor Design for Ivy Bridge Explained

Intel on May 4 announced that it is ready to put Tri-Gate transistors with a three-dimensional structure into high volume production with its 22-nanometer (nm) "Ivy Bridge" architecture. Tri-Gate 3-D transistor design, first disclosed by Intel in 2002, represent a departure from the two-dimensional planar transistor structure so far in use. The Intel breakthrough comes as the increasingly dense packing of transistors on silicon chips neared physical limits that threatened to derail Moore's Law, which states that roughly every 2 years transistor density will double, while increasing functionality and performance and decreasing costs. Moore's law has been the basic business model for the semiconductor industry for more than 40 years. "Intel's scientists and engineers have once again reinvented the transistor, this time utilizing the third dimension," said Intel President and CEO Paul Otellini. "Amazing, world-shaping devices will be c

Justin Bieber Toothbrush

If you are a fan of this cute 17-year old Canadian singer, then you will surely be excited about the new products for oral hygiene from… Justin Bieber . The new collection features not only toothbrushes , but also dental flosses and even tongue scrapers! Yet, the most exciting feature of those products is not Justin’s photo or autograph, but rather the fact that the toothbrush can ‘’sing” you a couple of Bieber’s tracks while you are brushing your teeth. Those toothbrushes have small built-in speakers ! Initially, the new line of oral hygiene products was presumed to be developed for young consumers, however the line also has toothbrushes for adults as well as for kids and teens. The products will be available for purchase through Justin’s official website in July 2011. This line of oral hygiene products makes one wonder if manufacturers have some other similar ideas, such as singing bath sponges, which would ‘’sing” in duet with those of us who love to sing in the shower

Radiation Measuring Plate

Fukushima nuclear plants are a source of constant worry? Is food from Japan safe? Well, there is a concept that is aimed to exterminate any possible doubt about it. Nils Ferber , a really concerned person, came up with a special plate that reads the level of radioactivity of the food you are going to eat. Called the Fukushima Plate , the food safety gadget (there’s a feeling that it won’t do to call it just a “plate”) is fitted with a radioactive meter that is connected to three OLEDs that run along the edge of the plate. As soon as you have put some food on it the meter scans the stuff and lights up the OLED ring indicator that corresponds to the level of contamination. Now you know if your food is harmful – or rather will know when the concept has been accepted for manufacturing. Meanwhile, other methods have been employed towards the same purpose – like a video showing Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano of Japan putting down a strawberry from the region near the Fukus

Amazon Gearing Up to Challenge Apple's With its Tablet Computer

Amazon has reportedly entered into a contract with Taiwan based Quanta Computer for supply of tablet computers starting the second half of this year. According to Digitimes, Amazon tablets will use touch panels with Fringe Field Switching (FFS) displays sourced from E Ink Holdings (EIH). Amazon's monthly off-take from Quanta is expected to peak at 700,000 to 800,000, suggesting that the company's entry into the already crowded tablet market isn't a me too effort, rather a hard push. Quanta is currently OEM for RIM and Sony tablets and has been plugging itself as OEM for Lenovo's second-generation LePad. Amazon's new tablet isn't a replacement for its Kindle e-book reader, which continues to show strong sales, though only in the US; its a frontal attack on Apple's near oppressive dominance of the tablet market. With its marketing muscle and huge client base, Amazon can more easily challenge Apple than technology giants such as Samsung and Mo
