Samsung Sold More Smartphones Than Apple in Q1

Samsung sold 40 million smartphones in the first quarter against Apple's 32-33 million according to ACI Research analyst Edward Zabitsky. [via Forbes] It gets worst for Apple, according to Zabitsky, because Samsung internally manufactures $60-$80 worth of the components that go into its smartphones, while Apple manufactures just $25 worth. Ironically, Apple buys a lot of its smartphone components, including memory chips and displays, from Samsung. "Samsung's internally sourced displays, processors, and memory require a low incremental cost to produce," says Zabitsky. The competition from Samsung is poised to intensify with the release May 3 of the Galaxy S3. Samsung's new flagship smartphone is expected to feature an a Exynos 4412 quad-core processor, a low power retina quality AMOLED display and a LTE/CDMA baseband processor, all internally manufactured.
