According to a reliable iMore source, iPhone 5, and possibly the iPad mini also, will launch on September 21. iPhone 5 is rumored to be a 4-in, 16:9 screen device with a LTE radio, NFC hardware, 1 Gb RAM and bigger battery. It will support a nano-SIM and a smaller Dock connector. The iPad mini is expected to be identical to the 9.7-in iPad, but with the screen scaled down to 7.x-in.

Google is working on a device that would compete with Apple's iPad, and plans to release it later this year, according to a Google employee who has been briefed on the project. [via NYT] It was earlier reported that the Google tablet, referred to as the Nexus tablet, would be priced between $149 and $199, making it a Kindle Fire competitor. On Thursday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Google plans to sell co-branded tablets through its own online store, just as it did with the Nexus One smartphones in 2010. The Nexus One, a co-branded phone made by HTC, didn't sell well and Google eventually shut down the store. Selling a tablet is different from selling a smartphone. Apple will reportedly launch two new iPad versions, both with 9.7 inch displays, at the iWorld on January 26, 2012. According to Digitime sources, apple will continue to market its iPad 2 at a reduced price, as a competitor to Amazon's Kindle Fire at the low end of the market. Apple is expected to reinforce the iPad's status symbol appeal with a slimmer and sleeker iPad 3, going by the company's recent tie-ups for supply of batteries for tablet computers. Taiwan Economic News reported on Tuesday that the Cupertino based company has tied up with Simplo Technology Co. and Dynapack International Technology Corp. to supply battery packs for the iPad 3 that are thinner and lighter than those used in earlier iPads, and also feature a longer service life. A Taiwanese brokerage firm is reporting that iPad 2 launch has been pushed back from April to June because of production bottlenecks, but cuts in iPad prices in the UK suggest the product's launch maybe imminent. According to Reuter, Yuanta Securities of Taiwan attributed the delay in iPad 2 launch to a late in the day format change by Apple that has forced manufacturer Hon Hai to change its production process. iPad 2 is reported to be slimmer and lighter than its predecessor and features a second front facing camera for video chats. A note by Yuanta Securities says, "Our checks suggest new issues are being encountered with the new production process and it is taking time to resolve them." Microsoft is set to release a version of its Windows operating system that is honed for use on tablet computers built using power efficient processors.
