Sony Ericsson Makes Xperia Cheaper and Handier in the X8

Last week Sony Ericsson announced the release of three new cell phones, one of which is a compact version of their Xperia series X10. To be expected early this fall, X8, an attempt to reproduce the Xperia X10 possibilities in a smaller and less expensive model, will look just like the X10 mini handset . It will run the latest Android 2.1 Eclair with, presumably, an upgrade possible right upon its release. Curvy and stylish, the X8 will be available in four colors which are marked as pixellated tinge on one end of the handset. It will feature a 3″ screen and a 3.2mega pixel camera for making video. Social network facilities are all there: you get a Facebook application and the Sony Ericsson Timescape user interface providing a real-time stream of the relevant information gleaned from all of your feeds. There is no official word on pricing but according to what the SE blog spills it will come to something like 200 euros (about $248).

DIY Player Invites You to Keep All Your Gadgets Together

Rather unexpected and daring, that one, what? Let’s look into it. Designer Shao Wen came up with a concept device called the DIY Player that you can at your wish turn into – oh, anything, a cell phone , a gaming console , a media player . Wen’s universal player is a base screen to which a number of modules can be attached. You plug in a keyboard to use it as a handset, and as soon as you need a gaming console or a player you just exchange the keyboard for the appropriate console. Of course there are people who will jump at the gadget and people who don’t take to the idea of carrying a handful of keyboards and consoles and going through the endless bother of plugging in and out. These things want trying out to know whether they are really so convenient as they sound. But at the very least when you want to update you can get a new console without chucking the whole handset and buying a newest one.

Samsung Galaxy Tablet - More rumors

The upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tablet is rumored to feature "full phone functionality" like the Dell Streak, with a standard SIM slot and 3G data connectivity. The tablet doesn't have a dedicated earphone; you can either use the built in speaker or blue tooth headphones when making calls. A video posted on YouTube yesterday, which has since been removed, showed the purported device with the phone dialer application. The device was marked P1000 and had four hard buttons at its base. An anonymous Endgadget source that appears credible, confirmed the P1000 designation today. The source also claimed the tablet is as thin as an iPhone (0.37") and features a 3.2 MP camera with an additional front facing camera for video chats. Other features include WiFi and teethering using WiFi or USB. The battery cannot be removed, as with the iPad. A Vietnamese site had earlier reported that the Galaxy Tablet features an A8 processor at 1.2GHz clock speed, 16 GB of intern

Latro Lamp That Will Light up When You Breathe out

Yes, CO2 from your lungs can get this lamp alight, are you really surprised with science as highly developed as it is? You can almost call it a living lamp, for it is powered by algae tucked away in a special chamber. So take a little care to supply it with sufficient sunlight, CO2 and water, and you get an excellent bio-cum-battery lamp . The idea for creating the Latro Lamp sprang up from a recent research carried out at the universities of Yansei and Stanford. It was found that during photosynthesis algae emit tiny electrical currents that can be stored in a battery. So the Latro Lamp accumulates the energy the algae generate during a day out in the sunlight. It is fitted with a light sensor to control the intensity and ensure that the algae are kept properly nourished. Designed by Mike Thompson and displayed at Designboom, it just may be the beginning of a biological revolution in consumer gadgets. At least that’s what Thompson is dreaming about. He is sure that “pl

Genos Cyclops to Control All Your Gadgets

An elegant and shining disk, easily fitting into your hand, Genos’s CYCLOPS had been meant to become the keyboard for the GenosTV Cable box, but it eventually evolved into a remote control that can service all the consumer electronic devices imaginable. That includes TVs and most cellphones that can be accessed via Bluetooth. For the time being CYCLOPS lays claim to be the most ergonomically correct universal controller on the market. Small and handy, it can also catch on as a universally-loved wireless keyboard. It appears that a CYCLOPS video game console-compatible version will soon be out as well, so gamers get ready to go Genos! With such sweeping potential, will it chase away most of our present-day controllers and become literally universal?

Living Pixels Lamps Magic Forest of Light

These “trees”, “bushes” and “garlands” of magically colored lights can easily transform any place that looked ordinary a flick of a switch before into a resplendent and mysterious locus… And all that stuff coming straight from the dumping site. These bizarre Living Pixels Lamps have been knocked together by a group of Hong Kong based designers from recycled materials like old-fashioned and discarded light stands and various bulbs. Recycled banners were cut up and pieced together anew to make lampshades or diffusers. Everything in the lamps is completely eco-friendly . Every item of the Living Pixels is completely unique being constructed of a different set of materials and featuring light diffusion unlike any other lamp of the series. Well, when you switch them off the lamps fade into an utterly common white stand, but all the greater the difference when you turn them on and watch the gasping effect on your guests!

Killing Design Earphones

There may have been a couple of incidents in the world history when people walked about with bullets in their heads, and you know what? From now on there’s going to be a lot more of it. Because that’s exactly what everybody who will buy Munito Teknines Nine Millimeter Earphones is going to do. That’s right, the new Munito Teknines are a spitting image of 9mm bullets . Outside the stunning design they can boast 18K gold plating, good sound quality (assumed) and a price tag of $250. Those who are already excited at the idea of drawing their friends’ attention to their new unique headphones will be able to get them in the second half of June.

Flutter Design Future of Cellphones

Here’s what the LG competition for the new cellphone designs brought up as the (possibly) best design for the oncoming generation of handsets – a gadget called Flutter . This winner of the Propmaster’s Choice Award resembles closed-in wings, and the impression is correct, for it opens fanwise to bring out a flexible screen hidden within it from whence you can use the features. If you want just to make a call, you don’t have to flip it open – you’ve got your numerals lined up outside on a shiny standout and a tiny part of the screen visible should you need your display.

Sony Gives OLED Display a Push into the Future

There has been attempts to produce roll-out OLED displays before, and it certainly looks like the project for the future, when we will be using our cellphones with displays that can be rolled out whenever we need a much larger screen. And now Sony has made a great step in this direction, turning out a 4.1-inch super-thin screen. It boasts a 432 x 240 resolution with unheard-of color and contrast for that sort of screen , although slightly marred by some vertical and horizontal lines that aren’t supposed to be here. It is rolled onto a pencil cylinder, and another wonderful thing about it is that it goes on showing even while you are rolling it in. According to Sony, the screen’s contrast ratio is 1,000:1. With its imperfections and drawbacks, Sony’s new OLED still goes a long way beyond what we had before.

HTC Evo 4G becomes Sprint's best selling phone

HTC Evo, which went on sale Friday, June 4, ushering in the 4G era in mobile connectivity, broke sales record for Sprint on launch day. While Sprint hasn't released precise figures, it claims that Friday sales of HTC EVO 4G marked the largest quantity of a single phone sold in one day ever for Sprint - the record was previously held by both Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre. The margin by which Evo 4G sales surpassed those of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre was even more impressive with the total number of Evo devices sold on launch day being three times the number of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre devices sold over their first three days on the market combined. With consumers eager to sample the 4G experience, temporary shortages of the device are being experienced at some of the 22,000 sales locations across the United States, including Sprint retail stores, national retail partners including RadioShack, Best Buy and Walmart, and indirect dealers. Sprint is the only na

Dreamate Sleep Inducer

If you’re one of those people that suffers from unusual sleep patterns and you want to get your body back in to check you might be able to do it with this acupuncture sleeping gadget, the Dreamate Sleep Inducer. Dreamate uses accupressure techniques to gently massage the “sleeping golden triangle” on your left wrist. Used 30 minutes before bedtime, you can retune and reset your biological clock and train your body to relax and sleep. See results in as little as a week’s worth of use, with best results after eight weeks. These precise pressure points, when gently massaged, calm the body, lower stress levels, and induce sleep. Slip Watch Makes

Every single time you want to check your watch to read the time, you have to twist your arm around just to read it. Thankfully someone has finally had the common sense to create a watch that you don’t have to be a contortionist to read. Sure, you could always turn your arm to read the time, but this is so much easier. Of course, the watch looks a little silly with the face slightly angled, but it keeps things interesting. The Slip Watch doesn’t exactly have numbers printed on it, so until you get used to the lack of labeling it might still take a few extra seconds to read the watch. After that though you’ll have the ability to be much more lazy about reading the time. Sadly this doesn’t appear to be a purchasable item. It seems to be purely a concept by the NonLinear Studio.
