The lower price point suggests the tablet will use a relatively cheaper dual core processor, instead of the previously reported quad-core Tegra 3. Fujifilm was recently granted a patent for a sensor that uses a photo sensitive organic (carbon based) film on top of silicon substrate with circuitry for electron readout. The organic coating converts photons impacting the sensor directly to electrons, unlike CCD and CMOS sensor that use silicon photodiodes to convert photons to electrons. The electrons produced are read by circuitry embedded in the silicon substrate, just as in the case with traditional CCD and CMOS sensors. The organic film allows practically the entire surface area of sensor to be used for sensing light (100% aperture), which is not the case with traditional sensors. The extremely thin organic layer is able to absorb enough light making the sensor free from spectral cross-talk between tiny pixels when capturing slanting rays of light. Intel plans a new range of processors to power tablet computers, a significant tweak to its earlier plan of using Medfield processors for both smartphones and tablet, reports Digitimes. The Medfield platform, built on the Cedar Trail architecture, is Intel's first purpose-built 32nm platform for smartphones and tablets, optimized for both low power and high performance. The platform was expected to enable sub-9mm designs Tablets weighing less than 1.5 pounds. Intel's overhaul of its 2012 product roadmap has been prompted by a desire to field processors that can match ARM CPUs in terms of thermal design power (TDP), facilitating increased battery life. The company aims to bring TDP of its smartphone and tablet processors down to 10W over the next two years. Sources tell Digitimes that Intel plans to launch 32nm Saltwell, 22nm Silvermont and 14nm Airmont chipsets in the next three years.

Samsung announced the latest addition to its Exynos product family - the Exynos 4212 - a dual core ARM Cortex-A9 application processor for Smartphones and Tablets on Wednesday, September 28. The Exynos application processor is displayed at the eighth annual Samsung Mobile Solutions Forum held at the Westin Taipei, Taiwan. Exynos 4212 features 25 percent increase in processing power and an enhanced graphics processing unit (GPU) that is capable of delivering 50 percent higher 3D graphics performance over the previous processor generation from Samsung. Intel demonstrated its next generation Haswell microprocessor at the Intel Developer Forum (IDFf) on Tuesday, September 14, 2011. Haswell CPU will start shipping on ultrabooks from 2013. To begin with ultrabooks will be powered by Ivy Bridge CPUs. Like Ivy Bridge, Haswell chips will use 22 nm architecture and Intels's recently announced power-saving tri-gate 3D transistor technology. In addition, Haswell CPUs will feature a totally redesigned cache, fused multiply add (FMA3) instruction support, and an on-chip vector coprocessor. Haswell will offer a 20x reduction in power consumption when idling as a result of power optimization, enabling devices to run the whole day on battery, and remain on standby for upto 10 days with a single battery charge.

Nvidia's Tegra 3 SOC, code named Kal-El, will feature in devices from five major phone companies and five major PC manufacturers each. Intel on May 4 announced that it is ready to put Tri-Gate transistors with a three-dimensional structure into high volume production with its 22-nanometer (nm) "Ivy Bridge" architecture.
