Black Box” Technology Comes to Cars

A company that provides communications systems to law enforcement agencies around the world has developed a black box similar to those used in aircraft to record crash data in cars. The Smart Black Box by KCI Communications sticks to your windshield and uses a built-in camera, GPS unit and G-force shock sensor to document accidents. The info could come in handy when trying to determine fault or explain to your insurance company just what happened when you crunched your car. “It’s the cheapest, most reliable thing yet for recording the events leading up to and after an accident,” Chris Pflanz, the company’s director of sales, told Wired.com. “We’re currently just trying to get the word out about this product, but we would eventually like to see insurance companies offer users of it a discount on their monthly premiums.” The Smart Black Box costs about $300 and constantly records video footage on a loop as you drive. Should the shock sensor detect an accident, the device saves the 15 ...

converged_mobile_devices_still_not_in_for_business_people

ontrary to what many geeks believe, the adoption of converged mobile devices like s martphones remains very low. According to a study by In-Stat among US business people, users are still loyal to old technology. Here are some free insights from this expensive report: One positive sign of progress in convergence is that 8% of road warriors, businesspeople who travel frequently, have given up a desk phone to rely solely on their mobile number. Before employers can insist that employees use fewer devices, manufacturers need to address battery life and ergonomics issues for portable devices. The survey shows that many more users prefer to carry redundant devices than chose to have a single telephone number and a single computing device.

House listing company launches mobile-tagging technology

Buyers interested in residential homes will be able to take virtual tours of properties on their mobile phone at the click of a button thanks to a barcode system. Real estate listing website Open2View.com is the first company of its kind to employ the use of mobile tagging with ‘quick response’ or ‘QR’ bar codes in New Zealand. The codes can be read by most new 3G mobile phones, so that when the phone’s camera snaps an image of the code it is redirected to an assigned website. The company launched the codes in response to growth of mobile and 3G services, and consumer’s desire for instant access to information. “Up until now real estate signs have really only let people know that a house is for sale – perhaps showing a couple of photos and giving the agent’s contact details, but essentially leaving all the work up to the would-be-buyer who has to note down the details, go home and then get online or on the phone to find out more,” said Open2View.com Managing Director Chris Bates. “We’r...

satellite_hopes_to_make_deadzones_a_thing_of_the_past

The world's largest commercial satellite has been launched into earth orbit with the goal of providing mobile phone service to "dead zones" all across North America. Owned by Reston, Va.-based TerreStar, the satellite is designed to pick up and relay signals from mobile phones. TerreStar has developed a smartphone with access to data and email. It needs a clear view of the southern sky to connect to the satellite. The phones can connect to regular AT&T ground-based towers as well. The company could also pursue similar deals with other wireless carriers. "Off the network grid, you can make calls via the satellite," said Jeffrey Epstein, President of TerreStar. "It's a terrestrial or cell tower in the sky." The satellite is due be followed by two similar, even larger ones from a competitor, SkyTerra Communications within the next year.

T H E F I F T Y

Zion introduced The Fifty in 1996 and it has become a favorite for many of our players. The refined styling and contoured body (complete with ‘tummy cut’ in the back) makes this guitar comfortable to play even in extended gigs. Your choice of woods, pickups, hardware, and finish complete your Fifty, along with our custom Zion Tweed case. Once you plug in and start chickin’ pickin’, you won’t be able to stop! Customer Quote – “ I own 3 (similar guitars) and have played dozens in my search for the "one." This guitar is light and very resonant… it rings like and acoustic when strummed… Comparing this to a production line (Brand Name) is not fair, the pickups are better, the finish is better, the wood is better and the neck is MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH better… The finish is so flawless, its scary. The neck fits very tight, and the neck finish is silky smooth. The 3 way switch is tight and the pots are very smooth. The fret work on the neck is as good as I have ev...

Amplifier Tutorial

Amplifiers are used to increase the voltage or power amplitude of signals. They have many applications. AUDIO VOLTAGE amplifiers boost the amplitude of signals between the frequency range 20 Hz to 20 KHz. This is the range of human hearing. They are often used as PRE-AMPLIFIERS before the main amplifier. AUDIO POWER amplifiers provide the power necessary to drive loudspeakers. They also amplify a frequency range from 20Hz to 20 KHz. INTERMEDIATE FREQUENCY (i.f.) amplifiers are used in radio receivers. ...
