Intel unveiled its first six core desktop processor - Core i7-980X Extreme Edition - at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco on March 10.
The processor that targets PC gamers can run 12 threads simultaneously at clock speeds of 3.33GHz
Developed under a project code-named Gulftown, the processor is based on the Westmere architecture made using the 32-nm process. The architecture improves processing speeds and reduces power consumption.
Intel currently offers a four core processor for gamers based on the Nehalem architecture using the 45-nm process.
GDC attendees can see and experience applications enhanced for this new platform - including newly released Sega* Napoleon Total War, the soon-to-be-released Ubisoft* RUSE, Geomerics* Enlighten and Cakewalk* Sonar at the Intel booth (South Hall, Booth 1212) and Intel lounge area during the event.
