Nikon has announced its new entry level Digital SLR - Nikon D3100 - that supersedes its existing entry level DSLR - Nikon 3000 introduced in August 2009.
The camera is being released with AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR lens kit.
The Nikon D3100 features a new DX-format CMOS image sensor with an effective pixel count of 14.2-million pixels, against the CCD image sensor of D3000 with 10.2-million effective pixels.
A new processing engine Expeed 2 works with the improved sensor to offered enhanced noise suppression and improve low light photography.
The camera has an ISO sensitivity range of 100-3200 (expandable to ISO 12800 equivalent)
It features a 11-point AF system for quick accurate autofocus ready for the decisive moment
It also features a compact camera like Live view that can be used to click photographs.
Nikon began equipping its entry level digital-SLR cameras with a Guide mode that displays instructions for the most basic camera operations for shooting, image playback and editing and the application of camera settings, in the camera monitor. The D3000 was the first camera to be equipped with Guide mode. The D3100 features an improved guide mode. For example, an Assist mode on the camera illustrates the effect of your camera settings on the image, letting you validate the settings before taking the shot. Other new Guide Mode functions include: Selection from 3 shooting techniques: "Use the viewfinder," "Use live view," "Shoot movies" "Bring more into focus" and "Show water flowing" options have been added to the "Advanced operation" menu for shooting "Movie settings," "HDMI," "Flicker reduction" and "Eye-Fi upload"* options have been added to the "Set Up" menu for applying basic camera settings" Movie Recording The camera's D-Movie functions enables HD video recording at the following settings: 1,920 x 1,080; 24 p - 1,280 x 720; 30 p - 1,280 x 720; 25 p - 1,280 x 720; 24 p - 640 x 424; 24 p Notably, the Nikon D3100 offers a servo AF mode that focuses the camera continuously on the subject during video recording, a feature that is still rare. The D3100 is equipped with the scene auto selector function. When live view mode is enabled in Auto or Auto (flash off) mode, the camera automatically analyzes the scene and selects the appropriate shooting mode from Portrait, Landscape, Close up or Night portrait. This function allows users achieve the intended images while leaving all settings up to the camera.
