The Pentax K-5 announced on September 20, features a new 16.28 MP sensor and imaging engine with sensitivity range from ISO 100-12800 and full HD 1920 x 1080 pixel, 25 fps video recording.
Other improvements include faster autofocusing speed and an upgraded HDR (High Dynamic Range) function now usable in handheld shooting.
Improved Sensor
The camera's new APS-C, 23.7 x 15.7mm sensor facilitates much faster data readouts than on the K-7. Pentax claims the sensor is as capable as the one fitted on its Pentax 645D medium-format digital camera.
Sensor sensitivity can be increased to ISO 80 - 51200 via a custom function.
Action photography support has been improved with burst mode of upto 22 stills at 7fps.
The K-5 features a redesigned, wide-frame SAFOX IX+ autofocus system with 11 sensor points. Contrast detection autofocus using the live view has been improved thanks to the new sensor and improved algorithms. The camera's HDR mode lets you capture a scene with dark tones and bright highlights, by taking three sequential pictures using normal, under and over exposure and then blending them into a single optimized image. Unlike the K-7, that allowed you to use HDR only when using a tripod, the K-5 features an automatic alignment correction function and allows you to use HDR with handheld shooting. The camera features an optical viewfinder with 100% field of view. The camera has a magnesium alloy body with a high-rigidity stainless steel chassis. It has 77 special seals to make the body dustproof, weather and cold resistant assuring reliable operation at temperatures as low as -10°C. 3-inch (921k dot) LCD New Sensor, improve ISO range and video capture.
