Samsung says it shipped 1 million Galaxy S smartphones to retail outlets in the US in the first 45 days since its launch.
The shipment figure may appear underwhelming when compared with the 1.7 million iPhone 4 units sold by Apple within the first week of its launch, but analysts believe the popularity of Galaxy S is an indication that Google Android based devices are starting to be looked upon as viable iPhone alternatives.
Galaxy S sales have probably been spurred by a backlash over Apple's vice like control over applications that can be run on the iPhone.
"No question there is an anti-Apple, pro-Android movement afoot," says Jack Gold, principal analyst at J.Gold Associates. [via Computer World]
"It's not just about price. It's also about having an open alternative with much less dictatorial control of what the user can do with the device."
Gold believes sales of Android devices will surpass Apple iPhone sales by 2011.
In the US, Samsung Galaxy S is being released under different names for each carrier.
Samsung Captivate for AT&T (Launched)
Samsung Vibrant for T-Mobile (Launched)
Samsung Epic 4G for Sprint (Launch August 31)
Samsung Fascinate for Verizon (Launch September 9)
The core features of the four versions are identical: 1GHz Hummingbird processor, Super AMOLED touch screen, Android 2.1.
They differ in design, content and name.
U.S. Cellular and Cellular South are also expected to ship their version of the Galaxy S.
Sprint's Samsung Epic version is a CDMA device compatible with Sprint's WiMax 4G and EVDO 3G networks. It features a slide-out physical keyboard in landscape mode and has a front-facing camera.
This is NICE! I've been dreaming of owning a galaxy for long already!
