Apple's MacBook Air is a bold plunge into fresh new waters that rival computer makers have wasted time just wetting their feet in.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the MacBook Air on October 20, terming it the "future of notebooks," something his rivals will also be forced to concede.
The MacBook Air takes inspiration from Apple's hugely successful iPad and builds on the solid foundation of the company's MacBook ecosystem.
"We asked ourselves what would happen if a MacBook and an iPad hooked up? Well, this is the result," Jobs said at a media event in Cupertino, California.

Featuring solid state storage only, the MacBook Air can be turned on instantly, weighs a lot less than notebooks with conventional spinning disks, makes hard disk crashes history, and is very energy efficient, giving up to seven hours of battery life with wireless networking and up to 30 days of standby time.
Energy efficient Intel Core 2 Duo processor and NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphic card delivers an ideal balance of mobility, battery life and performance.
The MacBook Air is available in two models: A 11-inch display model that weighs 2.3 lbs and costs $1,000. It is powered by a 1.4 GHz processor supported with 2GB memory and 64GB flash storage. A 13-inch display model weighing 2.9 lbs priced at $1,300. It is powered by a 1.86 GHz processor supported with 2GB memory and 128GB flash storage. Both models feature high-resolution LED-backlit displays, multi-touch trackpad that lets you tap, pinch, swipe, drag, rotate, and scroll with ease; 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and two USB ports. The 13-inch MacBook Air also includes an SD card slot. Configure-to-order options include faster processors and 4GB of memory. MacBook Air is immediately available on order through the Apple Store. The MacBook Air is powered by Mac OS X Snow Leopard. It comes loaded with the new iLife 11 application suit for creating and sharing great photos, movies and music. At the media event, apple also announced the next version of its Mac OS – Lion which will incorporate an application store like the one available for iPhone, and FaceTime video chat application. MacBook Air batteries can be recharged upto 1,000 times and replaced for $129, Ironically, rival notebook makers like Dell have dabbled with personal computers featuring solid sate storage, but they have not dared to offer it on anything more than a netbook.
