Samsung Demonstrates 330Mbs WiMax 2

Samsung demonstrated 330 Mbps downloads using the yet to be finalized WiMax 2 standard at the currently underway CEATEC IT and electronics tradeshow in Japan.

Using a trail network that it setup in collaboration with Japanese ISP UQ Communications, Samsung is streaming full-HD 3D videos and 16 Full-HD videos on 4 LFD (Large Format Display) TVs at the same time.

The currently implemented standard of WiMax is 802.16e. In the US, Clearwire has a network based on the standard and the company leases its infrastructure to ISPs such as Sprint, Comcast and Time-Warner Cable.

Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile plan to use LTE technology for their 4G networks which they plan to roll out over the next two years.

WiMax 2 is based on the 802.16m standard that is expected to be finalized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in November 2010. It will deliver peak throughputs of more than 300 Mbps in a 20 MHz channel and average downloads of 100 Mbps, while being backward compatible with 802.16e.

Like the 802.16e standard, WiMax will cover 31 square mile per access point.

Certification of WiMax 2 devices will occur throughout 2011, and ISPS will start commercially deploying the standard in 2012.
