Samsung has announced that it had entered into an agreement with Microsoft to license Windows Phone 7.
In a September 30 press release, Samsung says it plans to launch several models based on Windows Phone 7 this year in the US, Europe and Asia.
Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 smart phone OS will be unveiled on October 11 and is expected on handsets in stores by November.
Windows Phone 7 OS does not retain any Windows Mobile features. Windows Mobile has been phased out.
Phone 7 comes with a touch-screen interface like the one featured on Microsoft's Zune music player and movable 'tiles' that access various phone functions.
Microsoft has announced that Dell, Asus, LG, HTC, and Samsung will release Windows Phone 7 devices to the market later this year.
Microsoft is confident that despite its late entry, Windows Phone 7 OS will be ranked amidst market leaders like iOS-4, Android and BlackBerry.
Windows Phone 7 devices will feature the following minimum hardware:
8GB built in flash storage and 256MB RAM
High-end processor (ARM v7 Cortex/Scorpion)
Capacitive multitouch
FM radio tuner
Accelerometer
5MP camera
In addition, the device is required to have six specific hardware buttons: home, back, search, camera, power and volume.
AT&T is expected to be the initial Network provider for Windows Phone 7 devices.
