Sony Develops 16.41MP CMOS Sensor for Mobile Phones


Sony today announced the development of a 1/2.8-inch back-lit CMSO sensor (IMX081PQ) and matching lens module for use on mobile phones.

The sensor will ship starting January 2011.

The Sony press release also announced the development of a 1/3.2-inch, 8.13 MP back-lit CMOS sensor (IMX105PQ) with lens module that will ship in April 2011.

Besides a dramatic increase in the number of pixels, the new sensors feature significantly high sensitivity and low noise, facilitating low light photography.

The IMX081PQ sensor features a pixel size of 1.12µm, while the IMX105PQ features a pixel size of 1.4µm.

The sensors feature high readout rates allowing for capture of full HD video at 15fps.

The lens module developed with the sensors support autofocus and have been downsized for use on mobile devices. They come with 28mm wide angle lens (35mm equivalent).
