Microsoft officially announced its new Windows Phone 7 Smartphone OS - simultaneously with nine supporting smartphones from HTC, Samsung, LG and Dell - on October 11.
Making the announcement at a launch event in New York City, Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, dwelt on how the new OS will help users perform their email, social networking and entertainment tasks faster and emphasized its integration of other popular Microsoft platforms like including Xbox, Zune, Office and Bing.
Here is an over-view of the nine phones launched.
HTC Windows Phone 7 Devices
HTC signaled its strong support for the new Microsoft OS with the announcement of a whopping five different smartphones: HTC 7 Trophy, HTC 7 Mozart, HTC HD7, HTC 7 Pro and HTC 7 Surround.
Three of the HTC phones - HTC 7 Trophy, the HTC 7 Mozart, and the HTC HD7 - will be available for purchase in the UK on October 21 and in the US on November 8.
HTC's HD7 is its most powerful Phone 7 device with a 4.3", 480 x 800 display, 1GHz chipset and 576MB RAM, 512MB ROM, 8/16GB storage. It comes with a kickstand and features Dolby Mobile and SRS surround sound. It will be available on T-Mobile in the US and O2 in UK.
HTC Mozart : 3.7", 480 x 800 display, 1 GHz chipset and 576MB RAM, 512MB ROM, 8GB storage. The phone features a 8MP camera with AF and xenon flash. It will be available on Orange and T-Mobile in UK.
HTC 7 Surround: 3.8", 480 x 800 display, 1 GHz chipset and 576MB RAM, 512MB ROM, 8GB storage. The phone features a slide out speaker with surround sound. It will be available in North America only.
HTC7 Pro: 3.6", 480 x 800 display, 1 GHz chipset, 576MB RAM, 512MB ROM, 16GB storage. It features a slide and tilt out QWERTY keyboard. It will be available on Sprint in the US in 2011.
HTC Trophy: 3.8", 480 x 800 display, 1GHz chipset, 576MB RAM, 512MB ROM, 8GB storage. It will be available on Vodafone.
LG
LG Optimus 7 features a 3.8-inch, 480x800 screen, 1GHz Qualcomm QSD8650 processor and 576MB RAM, 512MB ROM,16GB storage.
LG Optimus 7Q (UK) / LG Quantum (US): 3.8-inch, 480x800 screen, 1GHz Qualcomm QSD8650 processor and 576MB RAM, 512MB ROM,16GB storage. The phone features a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. It will be available on AT&T in the US and a yet to be confirmed carrier in the UK.
Samsung
Samsung Omnia 7 (UK) / Samsung Focus (US): 4.0", Super AMOLED, 480 x 800 display, 1GHz Qualcomm QSD8250 chipset, 8GB internal storage. The phone features a FM radio. It will be available on AT&T.
Dell
Dell Venu Pro: (Earlier referred to as Lightening): 4.1", AMOLED, 480 x 800 Gorrila glass display, 1GHz Snapgragon chipset. Its USP is a slide-out portrait QWERTY keyboard.
Other than the HTC Mozart, all the phones launched feature a 5 Mps camera with autofocus and 720p video.
