Images of the NEX-C3 were first leaked on the web on April 22, 2011. The photos reveal some of the features of the new camera.
In May 2010, Sony became the fourth camera manufacturer to launch a mirror-less DSLR - after Olympus, Panasonic and Samsung - when it launched the NEX-5 and NEX-3.
The cameras, touted as the smallest and lightest in their class, featured APS-C sized sensors and interchangeable lenses, both standard features of traditional DSLRs.
The Exmor CMOS sensors on the NEX-5 and NEX-3 Sony cameras had a 14.2 megapixel resolution.
The NEX-C3 features an improved 16.2 megapixel image sensor, rumored to be the same as the one used on Sony Alpha A55 DSLR.
Besides the improved sensor, the NEX-C3 adds a flip-out LCD. The NEX-5 and NEX-3 featured 3", 921k dot high resolution LCDs. It is likely that the NEX-C3 will add touch capability to the LCD.
The NEX-3 featured 720p HD video and built-in stereo microphones for high-quality audio recording. Going by the markings on it, the NEX-C3 features and video recording and a built-in stereo mic. It's not known if it improves the video capability in any way. The NEX-5 offered Full HD movie capture (1080i AVCHD and 720p MP4) with Full HD 60i recording.
Like the NEX-3 and NEX-5, the NEX-C3 does not feature any manual control.
It is not yet clear, whether the NEX-C3 is a successor to the NEX-3, or a reintroduction of the camera with tweaks. (The NEX-3 was withdrawn 8 months after its launch.)
In May 2010 there were reports that Sony will introduce a NEX-7 model in September with manual controls, electronic viewfinder, and an improved APS-C sized sensor that will allow video capture at 1080p at 60fps and 24fps. So far we haven't seen the offering.
