The Nikon 5100 is an entry level DSLR with many features for professionals.

The D5000 was the first Nikon digital-SLR camera equipped with the vari-angle monitor that can be viewed in normal position flush against the camera back, or swung out and rotated and/or tilted. When not in use, the monitor can be stowed with the LCD panel facing the camera back, essentially becoming its own rugged monitor cover.

The monitor on the D5100 features a side hinge that prevents the monitor from hitting the tripod when it is opened while the camera is mounted on a tripod. The vari-angle monitor opens from 0 to 180° to the side, and can be rotated up to 90° clockwise and up to 180° counter-clockwise when it is open. This enables shooting from a wide variety of angles, from low to high, making even self portraits possible.

The camera ships with a AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR kit lens.
