Amazon tablets with 10-in and 7-in LCD displays similar to the Nook and Galaxy tab are expected to hit the market in time for the holidays.
According to a report in Pcmag.com by analyst Tim Bajarin, quoting sources in Taiwan, Amazon plans to enter the crowded tablet market with devices that have a USP: an excellent reading experience.
Amazon initially explored the possibility of offering tablets that could switch between a black and white E Ink-like display optimized for reading and a color LCD typical of contemporary tablet computers.
Vendors are known be working on such displays, but they were not in a position to supply them to Amazon before late 2012 or early 2013. As a result, Amazon settled for the traditional LCD display.
Barjarin source also confirmed earlier reports that one of the Amazon tablets will feature the quad core NVIDIA T30 "Kal-El" SoC.
A lower end device will be based on the Tegra 2 platform. The Kal-El platform gives a 500% performance boost over the Tegra 2 platform.
Reports that Amazon plans to launch tablet computers first surfaced early in May, when Digitimes reported a tie-up between Amazon and Taiwan based Quanta Computer for supply of 700,000 to 800,000 tablet computers a month with touch panels with Fringe Field Switching (FFS) displays sourced from E Ink Holdings (EIH).
The Pcmag.com report about switchable displays explains why Amazon would source displays from E Ink Holdings (EIH).
