Microsoft will reportedly test market Windows 8 / ARM tablets before the year end, according to Taiwan based Digitimes.
Windows has so far targeted systems using Intel processors, which are optimized for performance, unlike ARM processors, which are optimized for low power consumption and long battery life.
High power consumption of Windows systems has prompted most mobile device manufacturers to opt for the combination of Android / ARM systems.
Debuting the Windows 8 / ARM combination on Tablet computers entails less risk since tablets are used primarily for content consumption and hence less demanding of processor resources.
According to Digitimes, most Notebook manufacturers, concerned over the performance of the Windows 8 / ARM combination, will prefer to wait and watch before taking up production of Windows 8 devices.
On Monday, May 23, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer officially announced that Windows 8 will debut in 2012.
Speaking to software developers in Tokyo, Ballmer said, "As we progress through the year, you ought to expect to hear a lot about Windows 8. Windows 8 slates, tablets, PCs, a variety of different form factors."
Besides supporting ARM processors, Windows 8 is expected to feature a new interface optimized for touch as well as mouse / keyboard operations.
Microsoft released its Windows 7 OS in July 2009.
