Panasonic's Lumix G Micro Systems cameras are sized like compact cameras but have interchangeable lenses. They are much smaller in size than traditional DSLRs because they do away with the mirror box assembly and optical viewfinder unit. When it comes to image quality and versatility, they match DSLRs. The G series cameras use a Micro Four Thirds sized (17.3 x 13.0 mm, 4:3) CMOS sensor.
The 12.1 MP GF3 features a new Venus image processing engine that improves image sharpness when shooting in low light at high ISO sensitivities. The supported ISO range is 160-6400.
Mirrorless cameras use contrast AF, which is considerably slower than the phase detection autofocus used in traditional DSLRs. The GF3 is claimed to bridge the gap somewhat with an autofocus speed of 0.18 secs. In burst mode, it can shoot at 3.2 fps.
The DMC-GF3 records 1920 x 1080 full-HD video in AVCHD with full-time AF and tracking AF available during video recording.
The camera is targeted at professional photography beginners and features an improved iA (Intelligent Auto) mode that abstracts daunting advanced photography settings.
The DMC-GF3 features a built in flash, but no hot shoe. It has no electronic viewfinder.
You compose and set the camera using a a 3-inch, 460K dot LCD.
The DMC-GF3 has a aluminum body with a ergonomic grip and weighs just 264g without a lens, as compared to the 311g DMC-GF2.
With dimensions of 107.7 x 67.1 x 32.5 mm, it is claimed to be the smallest interchangeable lens camera, less voluminous thatn the DMC-GF2 by 16.7% (approx. 35cc).
The camera is priced at $599 with 14-42mm kit lens, and $699 with a 14mm lens.
