The Sony NEX-7 Compact Interchangeable Lens Camera, announced on August 24, attempts to bridge the performance gap between mirrorless cameras and traditional DSLRs.
Featuring a whopping 24.3 megapixel, APS-C sensor, ISO sensitivity range from ISO 100-16000 and shutter release lag of just 20 ms, it reduces the distinction mirrorless cameras and DSLRs to an obscure technicality.
The shutter lag, normally 100 ms, is dramatically reduced to 10 ms through the use of an electronic "first curtain" shutter. In the NEX-7, the shutter does not need to close before it can fire and take a picture.
As a result, the NEX-7 can capture fast-moving action at up to 10fps (AF/AE is fixed) – the world's fastest burst shooting speed of any mirrorless interchangeable lens camera (as of Aug 2011).
It can also capture full HD video at 60fps and 24fps.
Unlike Sony's earlier mirrorless model, NEX-3 and NEX-5, which featured only LCD based electronic touch controls, the NEX-7 comes with manual controls that give you quick access to settings that need to be frequently changed.
The camera also features an XGA (2.4m dots) OLED electronic viewfinder that is claimed to rival pro-grade optical viewfinders, with approximately 100 percent frame coverage and a wide field of view.
In addition, it has a 3-in, 921k dot LCD viewfinder that minimizes on-screen reflections and can be angled up to 90-degrees up or 45-degrees down.
The camera has an integrated flash system and also features an Auto-lock Accessory Shoe.
The very capable but diminutive NEX-7 features a magnesium alloy body and weighs just 10.3 oz (291g).
Anything good comes at a price. The NEX-7 will be available this November in a kit with an exclusive black 18-55mm zoom lens for about $1350, or as a body-only for about $1200.
