Nikon today announced its Nikon 1 series cameras - a new line of compact mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lens, and launched the first two models in series - J1 and V1.
The highlights of the Nikon 1 series cameras are the newly developed
CX format (13.2 x 8.8 mm, 2.7 crop) CMOS sensor.
Expeed 3 image-processing engine.
Nikon 1 mount lens system.
The CX format is a new addition to Nikon's existing FX (36.0 x 23.9 mm) and DX (23.6 x 15.7 mm) imaging formats for digital-SLR cameras.
The 10.1 MP, CX format CMOS sensor in the J1 and V1 is the world's first with built in phase-detection AF, making the J1 and V1 the first interchangeable lens cameras to offer focal plane phase detection AF .
The sensor offers standard sensitivities of ISO 100 to 3200, with the ability to further increase sensitivity to an equivalent of ISO 6400 with a Hi 1 setting. They also support matrix metering, center-weighted metering and spot metering.
The V1 actually uses an advanced hybrid autofocus system that combines phase detection AF, which enables faster focusing and superior subject tracking performance with moving subjects, with contrast-detect AF, which performs well in low-light conditions.
This hybrid system ensures high speed focusing even in low light condition, or with a moving object such as children and pets whose movement is very difficult to predict.
As a result, the cameras can shoot stills at 10 fps and video at 60 fps.
The J1 and V1 also boast the most focus points - 73 with phase detection AF - available with any interchangeable lens digital camera currently available.
Nikon has announced four 1 mount lenses to go with the cameras.
1 NIKKOR VR 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6
1 NIKKOR VR 30-110mm f/3.8-5.6
1 NIKKOR 10mm f/2.8
1 NIKKOR VR 10-100mm f/4.5-5.6 PD-ZOOM
Additionally, an adapter will allow F-mount NIKKOR lenses to be used with the Nikon 1 J1 and V1
The cameras comes with a 3-inch, 460K dot LCD monitor with protection glass and a wide viewing angle.
Other notable features include
1920 x 1080/60i full-HD video
A Motion Snapshot mode (V1 only) using which you can capture a still image with a second of high-resolution video footage beginning before and ending after the time the shutter-release button was pressed. Movies recorded in Motion Snapshot mode are played back in 0.4x slow motion.
The J1 is the more compact, less expensive model in the line up.
The V1 adds a 1.4 million dot viewfinder, an accessory shoe which works with an optional flash, microphone or GPS unit.
The J1 with a 10-30mm (27-81mm equiv.) lens kit will retail in the US at $649.95 starting around October 20.
The V1 with 10-30mm lens kit will retail for $899.95.
