Google Nexus 7 Tablet is No iPad Competitor |
The Google Nexus 7 tablet announced on Wednesday, June 27, features a 7-in screen, 1.3 GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor, 12 core nVidia GeForce GPU and 1GB of RAM. It runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Beans.
The Nexus 7, which is manufactured by Asus to Google's specification, is the world's first 7-in tablet that features a quad core processors. It weighs 340g and despite the horsepower that the device packs, its battery can support 9 hrs of HD Video playback. The display has a 1280×800 and 178-degree viewing angles.
There is a 1.3 MP front facing camera, but no main camera.
Other features include NFC with Google Wallet and Android Beam.,
The 8GB edition of the Nexus will cost $199, and the 16GB, $249.
Google emphasizes that the devices is honed for consuming content from its Google Play store - music, movies, video, games and apps.
The Nexus' 7-in screen is its most crippling limitation. A 10-in screen, like that on an Apple iPad, would have made so much more sense. The lighter weight of the Nexus and its significantly lower price tag of $199 compensate to a great extent.
Serious tablet user concerned about their productivity, already constrained by the tablet form factor, may find the lower weight and price underwhelming, but Google is betting on the charm of the price tag for the large number of consumers buying their first tablet.
The Google Nexus 7 is a powerful beast. Ironically its a beast that Google has let loose on its Android partners, not Apple. The rationale of Google poaching on the territories of its own business partners, that too on the ridiculously thin profit margin that would accrue from the $199 price tag, appears dubious.
The device that the Nexus 7 will probably hurt the most is Amazon Kindle Fire, which is in the same price range.
