iPhone 5 could feature a curved glass, going by reports that Apple has been purchasing glass cutting machines to mitigate reluctance on part of cover glass makers to invest in the machines because of high capital costs. According to Taiwan based Digitimes, apple has purchased 200-300 glass cutting machines for use by glass makers. However, Apple is still holding back volume production in order to first improve yields when manufacturing curved class. Reuters earlier reported, quoting sources, that iPhone 5 will debut in September, with volume production starting in July. Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone 4 at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco on June 7, 2010, with over 100 new features. Amazon initially explored the possibility of offering tablets that could switch between a black and white E Ink-like display optimized for reading and a color LCD typical of contemporary tablet computers. Vendors are known be working on such displays, but they were not in a position to supply them to Amazon before late 2012 or early 2013. As a result, Amazon settled for the traditional LCD display. Microsoft will reportedly test market Windows 8 / ARM tablets before the year end, according to Taiwan based Digitimes. Windows has so far targeted systems using Intel processors, which are optimized for performance, unlike ARM processors, which are optimized for low power consumption and long battery life. High power consumption of Windows systems has prompted most mobile device manufacturers to opt for the combination of Android / ARM systems. Debuting the Windows 8 / ARM combination on Tablet computers entails less risk since tablets are used primarily for content consumption and hence less demanding of processor resources. Street prices for Asus Transformer tablets are likely to drop by June as Asustek Computer will reportedly ramp up production from 100,000 units in May to 300,000 units in June. The Asus Eee Pad Transformer, sans its docking station, is currently selling $50 over its manufacturer recommended price of $400 on Amazon. Many outlets don't the competitively priced and impressively speced 10.1-inch, Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) tablet in stock. Nvidia's Tegra 3 SOC, code named Kal-El, will feature in devices from five major phone companies and five major PC manufacturers each. Speaking at the Reuters Technology Summit in New York on Monday, Nvidia co-founder and chief executive Jen-Hsun Huang said that the Santa Clara, California-based chip manufacturer's next generation mobile processor had gained acceptance from major manufacturers for use in phones, tablets and low-powered laptops. "It's got to be at least 10. We have five major phone companies and we have five major PC (manufacturers)," he said. Huang also predicted that just as Android based smartphone sales caught up with and eventually outstripped Apple iPhone sales, Android Honeycomb based tablets would eventually sell more than Apple iPads.
